When it comes to the most popular most used website on the internet there is little competition. Google has done well to distance itself as far and away the most popular search engine on the internet. The way that they have been able to do this is through word of mouth branding and focus on service.
For most people who are going to use a search engine when looking on the internet, they are going to use Google. It has become the one that everyone talks about because it has gained significant market share on the others. It was able to trump other search engines such as Yahoo and MSN because it focus almost exclusively on search. In fact, in it’s very early days Google was able to focus solely on search. This mean that you didn’t have to shift through all of the other content that was offered on many other sites in order to get to the search bar.
Having the narrow focus on search helped Google in another way that was little reported. Because of the lack of other content, Google was (and still is) one of the fastest loading websites on the internet. Those few less seconds that people had to spend waiting for their computer to load seemed to have made a big difference to them. Google was able to capitalize largely on that want for great speed. Once Google was able to reel in a few customers with this increased speed over it’s rivals, it was able to get a word of mouth campaign that helped it to become the multi-billion dollar company that it is today.
The lesson that can be learned from the Google model is that sometimes it is not about having the most possible features or products. Sometimes it is about perfecting what you do best. Many large companies have shown us the lesson time and time again throughout history. They have gotten themselves into trouble by not staying focused on the product that made them great in the first place. It is true that Google itself has diversified into other fields on the internet now that it is a large business. However, they have done so slowly and with great preparation. You are never going to see a company such as Google jump into something that they are not qualified to handle.
All of these lessons are important to remember for the small business owner as well. Don’t try to sell something or provide a service that you don’t completely understand.
